Autumn; Season of the Metal Element
In TCM Five Elements theory, Autumn is the time of the Metal Element.
This season is linked to the Lungs and Large Intestine - encouraging us to release the old and breathe in the new. For those with imbalances in the Metal Element, you may try Acupuncture for chest/breathing issues, frequent colds, poor digestion and low energy in this time.
Emotionally, the Metal Element pertains to grief and sadness. This emotion is housed in the Lungs, and we may feel it like a weight on the chest. We say goodbye to the vibrant, social Summer (Peak Yang) and prepare ourselves for the dark & isolation of Winter (Peak Yin).
The direction of energy in this season is inwards. It is a moment to ground, reflect, assess; transitioning from Yang to Yin. A cosmic inhale, a moment of stillness, as we prepare for what Winter has in store.
There are 5 souls in TCM, and the soul connected to the Metal Element is the Po. This is our corporeal soul - our only soul that allows us to physically experience the world around us. It is the first soul to enter our being at conception, and it is reabsorbed into the earth when we die. When balanced, Po allows us to feel connected to the self and experience our senses with curiosity. When imbalanced, we may feel disconnected, out of our body or trapped within it. As this soul is housed in the Lungs, breathing exercises can allow us to harmonise this spirit and feel at peace in our bodies.
Acupuncture in this season can be particularly beneficial to nourish the Lungs & Large Intestine systems, and settle the Po. “Free medicine” of breathing, chest opening stretches, and keeping digestion regular also play a key role in improving wellbeing at this time.
