IVF & Acupuncture

Acupuncture and In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) are two different treatments that can be used together to help improve fertility outcomes. Acupuncture is an ancient practice that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to improve the flow of energy, while IVF is a modern reproductive technology used to assist couples struggling with infertility.

In recent years, acupuncture has become increasingly popular among couples undergoing IVF, with many clinics offering acupuncture services as a complementary treatment alongside IVF.

Acupuncture and IVF: How do they work together?

Acupuncture can be used before, during, and after IVF to help improve fertility outcomes.

  • Before starting IVF: Acupuncture can help reduce stress levels and improve overall health, which can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is important to prepare the body for pregnancy, pre-empting any issues that may arise during. It is often recommended to begin a course of treatment at least 3 months before trying to conceive. Any underlying imbalances such as stress, poor sleep, poor digestion, headaches, and low energy can be worked on to assure the body is in it’s best possible state for a healthy pregnancy.

  • During IVF: acupuncture can help improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, which can increase the chances of successful fertilisation and implantation. Acupuncture treatments during this time may also be used to combat negative side effects of medications and relieve stress. If you are mid-IVF cycle, having acupuncture in the days leading up to egg retrieval can improve pelvic blood flow and ease stress.

  • Embryo Transfer Day: Acupuncture before and after the implantation procedure is recommended for best results. A well-studied protocol is used within 24 hours before, and 72 hours after the medical procedure, as close to the transfer as possible

  • After IVF, acupuncture can help reduce stress levels and support a healthy pregnancy. Acupuncture is a safe treatment throughout pregnancy, right up to cervical ripening and labour induction, in some countries it is even performed by midwives during labour!

IVF & Acupuncture Research:

A recent study from Homerton University Hospital, London, found that Acupuncture alongside IVF doubles the chances of pregnancy. This study was interesting, as it looked at the use of Acupuncture throughout the IVF journey, not only before embryo transfer (as is the case with many previous studies).

Studies have shown that acupuncture can help improve fertility outcomes for women undergoing IVF. One study published in the British Medical Journal found that women who received acupuncture alongside IVF were more likely to conceive and have a successful pregnancy than women who only underwent IVF.

Acupuncture can also help improve sperm quality and increase the chances of successful fertilisation for men undergoing IVF. One study published in the Journal of Fertility and Sterility found that men who received acupuncture had improved sperm motility and morphology, which can increase the chances of successful fertilisation.

Key Take-Aways:

Overall, acupuncture and IVF work together to help improve fertility outcomes by reducing stress levels, improving overall health, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs, and supporting healthy pregnancy.

If you are considering IVF, it’s worth exploring the benefits of Acupuncture as a complementary , cost-effective treatment to improve your chances of a successful pregnancy. To get started, book your first consultation and treatment here.
